Austin Pediatric Rash Dermatology Treatments
Pediatric Rash Basics
Pediatric Rash is a general term that encompasses a number of rashes—some viral, some pigmented, and they can be either congenital or acquired. A child can be born with irritable skin, or they can contract a virus while playing at school.
Rashes are very common with children, and in most cases are not a severe medical emergency. Children are exposed to a variety of viruses, irritants, or illnesses that can lead to the development of a rash. Some of the most common rashes are hives, eczema, viral illness (chicken pox, fifth disease, roseola, ect.), insect bites, heat rash, or a contact rash.
While the above rashes do not require an urgent page to your doctor, if you suspect that your child has petechiae or pupura, contact your doctor immediately. Petechiae appear as tiny, red, pinpoint, flat spots; almost as if someone used a fine-tip red pen to dot the skin. These spots will not blanch and they are completely flat. This is caused by a ruptured blood vessel under the skin and should be addressed as soon as possible.
Pediatric Rash Treatment
The first step to treating a rash is finding out what is causing it, whether it is a drug reaction, infection or an allergic reaction. Treatment options include moisturizers and steroids, antifungal creams, and anti-itch medications.
